What Is Decal Solution?

A decal solution is a specialized liquid designed to make waterslide transfers flexible enough to conform to uneven or textured surfaces. When applied, it softens the transfer, allowing it to adhere snugly to intricate details such as grooves, curves, or raised textures. This process prevents issues like peeling or lifting, which are common with untreated transfers.

Products such as Decal Fixer and Softener are engineered for this purpose. They not only soften the transfer but also help it integrate into the model's surface for a flawless, professional finish.

For hobbyists and model makers, applying waterslide transfers is an essential part of creating polished, professional projects. These sorts of products play a key role in ensuring that transfers adhere perfectly to various surfaces, resulting in a smooth, seamless appearance. From plastic models to intricate miniatures, these solutions make the difference between a simple sticker and a realistic, embedded design.

They enhance the performance and longevity of waterslide transfers by addressing common application challenges. They prevent issues such as:

  • Silvering: A cloudy or shiny appearance beneath the transfer caused by trapped air or insufficient adhesion.
  • Peeling: Lifting edges that fail to bond securely to the surface.
  • Misalignment: Difficulty in positioning the transfer due to lack of surface preparation.

By using them, hobbyists can achieve a professional, painted-on look that withstands handling and time.

What Is Decal Setting Solution?

These products prepare the surface of the model by creating an optimal environment for adhesion. They reduce the risk of air bubbles, silvering, or misalignment, ensuring the transfer of bonds securely and evenly.

Fixing solutions takes the process further by creating a strong bond between the design and the surface. By applying a setting solution before placing the transfer, users can achieve a higher level of detail and realism. Once the transfer is in position, the fixer also helps secure it further, preventing lifting over time.

By providing a smooth, adhesive-ready layer, they enhance the durability and longevity of applied designs. Combining these products in your workflow ensures that even the most intricate applications maintain their appearance and integrity over time.

How to Use Decal Setting Solution?

If we are talking about completely smooth surfaces, the process is very simple. First, ensure that the surface is clean and free from dust or grease, as these can interfere with adhesion. After soaking the waterslide transfer in water to activate its adhesive backing, the setting solution or decal fixer should be applied to protect the surface where the transfer will be placed.

This liquid helps the transfer settle into place smoothly. Once the design is positioned, gently press it with a soft cloth or a specialized tool to remove excess liquid and air bubbles. A second layer of setting solution can be brushed over the applied transfer to soften it further and ensure it conforms to the underlying texture. Allow the surface to dry completely before handling.

But if we are talking about a curved, rough, or simply textured surface, then 2 products must be used in order to adapt the transfer to the surface. In this case, you must repeat the same process as for completely smooth surfaces, but use a Softener to soften the transfer so that it can adapt to the surface. When finished, remove the excess and let it dry. Then, apply the same product we started with to protect the base, but this time to seal and integrate with the model we are decorating.

Can You Make Decal Solution at Home?

Some hobbyists explore the idea of creating their own transfer-softening liquids using white vinegar. The process involves diluting vinegar with water to mimic the effects of commercial products. Vinegar's mild acidity can make waterslide transfers more flexible, allowing them to conform to uneven surfaces.

While this might seem like a cost-effective alternative, the reality is less promising. Vinegar lacks the precise chemical balance of products like decal setting solutions. Its acidity can damage delicate transfers, causing discoloration, cracking, or loss of adhesion. Moreover, homemade solutions often fail to provide consistent results, leading to frustration and wasted materials.

Commercial solutions are carefully formulated to ensure reliable, predictable performance. They soften the transfer without compromising its structural integrity, something DIY mixtures cannot guarantee.

Their formulas are optimized for various materials, including plastic, metal, and resin, making them versatile for different projects. For hobbyists who value quality and precision, investing in purpose-built products is the superior choice.
